Example of a Lake Market Book

In the last several posts we’ve been examining different book marketing strategies by looking at how deep readers’ felt needs are and how wide the interest is in the topic. So far we’ve covered how to market your book to Puddle Markets, Bayou Markets and Well Markets. The fourth type of market to which authors can appeal is a Lake Market.

A Lake Market is variable: broad and deep, or broad and shallow, or long and shallow, or long and deep, or a little of everything. In a Lake Market, the topic of your book might appeal to a broader market than in a more narrow Well Market or in a more shallow Bayou Market. While your book may not have the mass appeal to take the world by storm, it could do well enough to appeal to a broad range of readers.

Some topics or areas of interest that would appeal to readers in a Lake Market might include:

  • Gluten-free diets
  • Fad diet books
  • Memoirs by well-known people
  • General travel books

Books about gluten-free diets speak to both a deep need and high interest for a large audience of readers, especially those who are gluten-intolerant. While there is a good-sized market for gluten-free diets, the general population has little interest in giving up gluten, though from time to time people do try to limit their gluten intake for fitness or diet plans.

When you’re aware of the depth and breadth of your audience, you’ll be able to find out more about your readers. When you know more about your readers, you’ll have an advantage over your competition in building your platform. You will be able to meet your readers where they are: on social media, in forums, at events.

Have you figured out your book’s market yet? If you have any questions, I’d love to help. Please comment below.
